Facial Feedback Signals for ECAs

چکیده
One of the most desirable characteristics of an intelligent interactive system is its capability of interacting with users in a natural way. An example of such a system is the embodied conversational agent (ECA) that has a humanoid aspect and the capability of communicating with users through multiple modalities such as voice, gesture, facial expressions, that are typical of human-human communication. It is important to make an ECA able to fit well in each role in a conversation: the agent should behave in a realistic and human-like way both while speaking and listening. So far most of the work on ECAs have focused on the importance of the ECA’s behaviour in the role of the speaker, implementing models for the generation of verbal and non-verbal signals; but currently we are mainly interested in modelling the listening behaviour. In this paper we will describe our work in progress on this matter.

MPEG-4 Facial Expression Synthesis based on Appraisal Theory
MPEG-4 facial animation parameters are used in order to evaluate theoretical predictions for intermediate expressions of a given emotion episode, based on Scherer’s appraisal theory. MPEG-4 FAPs and action units are combined in modelling the effects of appraisal checks on facial expressions and temporal evolution issues of facial expressions are investigated. The results of the synthesis proces...
متن کاملQuantative Evaluation of the Efficiency of Facial Bio-potential Signals Based on Forehead Three-Channel Electrode Placement For Facial Gesture Recognition Applicable in a Human-Machine Interface
Introduction: Today, facial bio-potential signals are employed in many human-machine interface applications for enhancing and empowering the rehabilitation process. The main point to achieve that goal is to record appropriate bioelectric signals from the human face by placing and configuring electrodes over it in the right way. In this paper, heuristic geometrical position and configuration of ...
متن کاملMental Health Promotion with Animated Characters: Exploring Issues and Potential
In this article, we explore the possibility of using animated characters as personal social companions for supporting interventions for promoting health behaviors. We explore how supportive feedback could be provided to users of such artificial companion systems, by coupling both personalized intervention content from a mental health perspective with personalized affective social agents such as...
متن کاملAffective Learning: Empathetic Embodied Conversational Agents to Modulate Brain Oscillations
Integrating emotional feedback to educational systems has become one of the main concerns of the affective learning research community. This paper provides evidence that Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs) could be effectively used as emotional feedback to improve brainwave activity towards learning. Further research, integrating ECAs into tutoring systems is essential to confirm these result...
متن کاملExpression of affects in Embodied Conversational Agents
Providing the virtual agents with expressive faculties is a contemporary challenge. The generated emotional behaviour for Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs) particularly has to be credible and varied. Cowell and Stanney (2005) showed that well chosen behaviours and emotional expressions improve the credibility of an agent. Behaviour expressivity can be conveyed through: the choice of the non...
